The airport
Porto's airport is named after Francisco Sá Carneiro and has the code OPO. It is not in Porto itself but in the neighbouring municipality of Maia, on the border with Matosinhos and Vila do Conde. The city is about 11 km away. The airport is run by ANA, the operator of Portugal's main airports.
You have three options for getting into the centre: the metro, STCP city buses and taxis. For most arrivals the metro is the simplest choice, because it starts at the airport and runs to the centre without a change.
By metro
Aeroporto station is the terminus of Metro line E, which runs between the airport and Trindade in the centre. The journey to Trindade takes around half an hour. On the way, the line stops at Senhora da Hora and Casa da Música, among others, before reaching Trindade via Lapa.
Some trains do not terminate at Trindade but continue via Bolhão and Campanhã to Estádio do Dragão. This is handy if you want to catch a long-distance train at Campanhã station. Check the destination shown on the train.
The first metro leaves the airport just after 6:00 and the last just before 1:00. If you land between these times, you can get into the city without waiting for a night bus.
At Senhora da Hora you can change to line A. In one direction it runs to Matosinhos by the sea, and in the other via Trindade into the city centre. Which line serves which district is covered in detail under Getting there and around.
Metro tickets, from the Andante card to paying contactless, are explained on the page Public transport in Porto.
By bus
Besides the metro, several lines run by the city bus company STCP serve the airport:
- Line 601 runs to Cordoaria in the centre, via the Mar Shopping centre.
- Line 602 also runs to Cordoaria, via Padrão de Moreira.
- Line 604 links the airport via Crestins with Hospital S. João in the north of the city.
At night, line 3M takes over. It runs hourly between 0:30 and 5:30 from the airport to Avenida dos Aliados in the centre, so there is a connection into the city even when the metro has stopped running.
Taxi and transfer
A taxi makes most sense if you have a lot of luggage, are travelling as a group or are staying far from a metro station. It takes you to the door without a change, even into the narrow lanes of the old town, where you would otherwise walk uphill or downhill with your cases.
A pre-booked transfer is the alternative if you land late at night and do not want to wait for the night bus.
Onward into the city
Trindade is the metro's main interchange. The lines running through the centre meet here, and from here you can reach the Baixa and the old town on foot or on another line. Where the districts are and which area suits you as a base is shown on the Where to stay page.
If you want to head straight on to the south of the country or to Lisbon, take one of the line E trains that run through to Campanhã. CP long-distance trains stop there. For more, see Getting there by train.
What weather to expect in each month is described on the Weather page.
