The bookshop

Livraria Lello is a bookshop on Rua das Carmelitas, in the heart of Porto's old town. It has been open since 1906, and its building is in the neo-Gothic style.

The bookshop now also has a new wing, the Nova ala, designed by the architect Álvaro Siza Vieira. It also has its own foundation, the Fundação Livraria Lello.

Tickets and book credit

You need a ticket to visit. The bookshop sells tickets through its own online ticket shop.

Every ticket counts as a voucher for a book. If you buy a book during your visit, the ticket value is deducted from the book price.

Planning your visit

Livraria Lello is open daily from 9:00 to 19:30. As it lies in the old town, a visit fits easily into a walk: on to the Torre dos Clérigos, down to São Bento station and further downhill to the Douro.

If you are spending several days in Porto and want accommodation within walking distance of the old town, see Where to stay.

Nearby

Close by stands the Torre dos Clérigos, the tower of the Clérigos Church. The church was designed by the Italian architect Nicolau Nasoni, and the tower has defined the skyline since 1763. A little further on is São Bento station, with its tile panels by the painter Jorge Colaço. Both are covered in more detail on the Sights page.

The lanes of the old town lead downhill to the Ribeira, the riverfront on the Douro below the Luís I Bridge.
